Khanpora residents stage protest over erratic power supply

BARAMULLA: The residents of Khanpora area of Baramulla on Monday hit the streets and staged a protest against the irregular power cuts in the area.
Sources said that a large number of people including women and children of Khanpora Baramulla hit the streets on Monday morning and blocked the Srinagar -Muzaffarabad road for some time to register their protest against the unscheduled power cuts in the area.
They said due to the blockade of the road hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the highway for some time.
Protesting people were shouting slogans against the power development department (PDD) and alleged that people of the area are facing hardships from the past several weeks. They said the area is metered but continued cuts irk the residents of the overall area.
Later a team of Baramulla police reached the spot and assured protesting people that they will forward their grievance to the concerned authorities.
Later they calleed off their protest but threatened that if the department will not solve their problem they will stage another protest and the department will be its responsibility for any outcomes.
An official of the PDD said that people are using heaters and boilers due to which transformers can not bear its load resulting in power cuts, however he said they will look into the matter.
