SKUAST-Kashmir releases eight new crop varieties

SRINAGAR: SKUAST-KASHMIR has releases eight new crop varieties including four in maize alone, and one each for rice, moong, oats and kala zeera.
This after the 24th meeting of the State Seed Sub Committee (SSSC) for varietal release was held at SKUAST-K, Shalimar. The meeting was chaired by Navin Kumar Chaudhary Ji (IAS), Principal Secretary to Government, Agriculture Production & Farmers’ Welfare Department, GoJK.
The meeting was convened to release the varieties of different field, fodder, pulse and spice crops developed by SKUAST-Kashmir.
The new varieties are in possession of novel features like drought resilience, quality, aroma, disease resistance, forage attributes and protein superiority in addition to yield advantages. Chairman of the meeting appreciated the efforts of producers of these varieties and stressed on continuation of such novel efforts of varietal development in future as well. He also emphasized on mass dissemination of these newly released varieties across their respective ecological niches and speeding up of their large-scale seed production. Speaking on the occasion the Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-K, Prof. Mushtaq Ahmad opined that these varieties will usher a new growth in farm sector. Director Agriculture Kashmir, Altaf Aijaz Andrabi emphasized on the inclusion of these new varieties in the seed chain and their subsequent impact on food and nutritional security in the valley. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks to the chair which was proposed by Iqbal Chaudhary, Joint Director (Extn) Agriculture Production Department, Kashmir.
