Facing drought, Hajan paddy growers seek improved irrigation facilities

HAJIN: Due to water scarcity locals of Hajin and its adjoining area this year fear a crop loss in paddy as the fields have dried resulting in a crop failure.
The locals said the water requirement to the paddy field is at quite necessary this time around as it is in a development stage and due to water scarcity created mostly by inoperation of lift irrigation schemes around the area the crop is destined to fail.
The locals said that lift irrigation schemes are not working normally that should be made operational soon to the suffering of the farmers.
A local Mohammad Latief told Kashmir Reader that About 3000 Kanal could be affected if water supply will not be provided to the fields .
He said that we are facing acute water shortage and paddy fields are dried and in dire need water
Abdul Hameed a local whose economy is dependent on rice fields as he owns 40 kanals of rice fields, is a worried man as his paddy fields are dried up.
He added that it’s drought like situation that could end hopes of a better crop as no rainfall since long and most of the time water pump stations remaining in operation could end hopes of a better harvest.
When contacted, the Executive Engineer Flood and Irrigation Control department said that since there is no rain and the normal water level for operating many of the lift schemes are not available ,it is a drought like situation.
He added that we are looking for some possible arrangements to go for diversions of some irrigation facilities to mitigate farmers woes.
