Shopian admin to act tough over misuse of potable water

Shopian: To tackle the growing menace of misuse of potable water and frequent diversion of this for irrigation, the district administration Shopian has decided to act against offenders by imposing fines and even initiating legal action against them.
The move comes after a fight between two villages erupted in Pinjora village where authorities tried to restore water supply to a locality which was denied the same since the last two decades.
Witnesses said that when authorities brought pipes to restore the supply, a large number of villagers from another locality stopped the process, which resulted into a scuffle between the two localities and police later used tear smoke shells to disperse them.
A public notice issued by the deputy commissioner’s office reads that “a lot of people in the district are puncturing the water supply lines and using the water for irrigation purposes of orchards and lawns which has resulted in drinking water shortage to many areas”.
According to the notice, executive engineer public health engineering or Jal Shakti Abhiyan has been told to report the names of such persons to the deputy commissioner’s office and people have been told to refrain from such activities.
It called upon the public to desist from such acts or face action.
It’s pertinent to mention that dozens of villages in Shopianare facing a drinking water crisis since a fortnight. Officials blame puncturing pipelines for irrigation purposes, incomplete schemes and drought like conditions responsible for water scarcity in many areas.
