3 Shopian village face acute water crisis for want of supply, contamination

Shopian: Three Shopian villages in South Kashmir are facing drinking water problems since a decade, with locals from these areas saying that the government is insensitive in providing a proper water supply with one of the villages being fed contaminated waters .
Villagers of Checki-Sangran, a locality comprising hundreds of souls told Kashmir Reader that they have had no drinking water facilities since a decade despite underground pipes laid to village from a neighbouring village water tank.
“The lines always remain dry as authorities aren’t providing us supply from Tulran water tank which is located a few kilometres away from our village,” Showkat Ahmad, a local said.
Villagers said that the callous attitude of authorities has forced villagers to consume water of nearby contaminated canal which according to them leads to frequent outbreak of diseases in the area.
Another village facing a similar problem is the Narvani village where locals are consuming water fed from Tongri Nalla that according to them is highly contaminated
“Our water supply scheme has its source from a dirty canal that other villagers do not even use for washing of clothes as it has turned dirty over the years, but we are being provided unfiltered water from it Javid Ahmad Mala, a local resident said.
Villagers demand that a new scheme should be given to the village so that they can get filtered water to alleviate that water woes.

“ Occasions they provide us water from a canal through pipelines rest of the time the pipes remain dry,” said a local.
Locals said that despite the village as historical significance they have been abandoned of basic facilities. “ Our village was once a Tehsil headquarter but now without even tap water,” Bashir Ahmad, another local added.
Executive engineer public health engineering department, Irfan Ul Islam told Kashmir Reader that the work on water supply scheme for Haripora is going on and it will be completed this year. “We are providing temporary services to the villages in this drought like conditions.
