Bear shot dead by man to save life of his father

Baramulla: A black bear was shot dead by a person in border town Uri after the bear attacked and injured his elderly father on Tuesday evening.
Official sources said that an elderly person, Nazamuddin, 75, of Dardkote Uri Baramulla, was walking outside his home when a black bear attacked him on Tuesday evening. The man raised a cry and it caught the attention of his family and other people, who ran towards him. The man’s son, identified as Shabir Ahmad, used his 12-bore rifle to shoot dead the bear on the spot.
Other people who reached the spot shifted the injured person to the nearby SDH in Uri, from where he was shifted to GMC Baramulla for further treatment.
Locals said that people threw stones and rocks at the bear but he was dragging away the elderly person when his son took out a rifle and fired a bullet at the bear. The bear died on the spot.
Wildlife Warden for north Kashmir, Mohammad Maqbool Baba, told Kashmir Reader that an investigation is on into the incident.
“Yes, we heard about the incident and our wildlife team along with police reached the spot Wednesday morning. An investigation is on. When our teams will complete their inquiry, we will inform you,” Baba said.
The area is very far-flung and close to the LOC in Kamalkote sector Uri.
A police officer said that they have registered a report and started an investigation.
