HC takes suo motto cognisance about defunct Trauma hospital in Ramban

SRINAGAR: The J&K High Court registered a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) after taking a suo motu cognisance of a news report about a Trauma hospital at Ramban being non-functional for last 10 years.
The court of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Rajnesh Oswal issued notice to the government through Secretary, Health and Medical education to show cause why the court should not admit the litigation for hearing.
The court took a note of news reported in a Jammu based daily Excelsior on May 19 captioned ‘Trauma Hospital Non-functional for last 10 years’. The report mentioned that the hospital has been non-functional on account of shortage of staff and infrastructure.
The court while directing to register the said news report as PIL issued notice to the government of Jammu and Kashmir through Secretary, Health and Medical Education, impleaded as respondent to show cause as to why this writ petition be not admitted to hearing.
“The respondent shall file a status report positively before next date of hearing,” the Division Bench said.
Meantime, the court appointed Monika Kohli as Amicus curiae in the matter. The court will again hear the case on June 16.
