BJP urges NC to reconsider decision

SRINAGAR: A day after the National Conference (NC) announced staying away from panahayat by-polls, BJP on Monday appealed the party to take part in the elections which are scheduled next month.
BJP state General Secretary Ashok Kaul told reporters that NC should contest the Panchayat polls without putting any conditions. Earlier, NC had said that there was no point in taking part in the Panchayat polls on party basis when top leadership of the party continued to be under detention after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5.
“We will welcome the NC’s move they participate in the polls. We request the National conference to take part in the Panchayat elections because no big leaders are required for the Panchayat elections and NC being a grassroots party must not shy away from taking part in it,” Kaul said.
According to him, local leaders are contesting the elections and not home minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda. He said rather than making statements about the polls, the NC must show its strength by taking part in the elections.
“These parties boycotted elections in the past, but fielded proxy candidates instead. They boycotted the Urban Local Body elections, but put up proxy candidates,” he said.
Besides, NC, PDP, Congress too have decided to stay away.
