Kashmir shuts on Bhat’s anniversary

SRINAGAR: Kashmir Valley on Tuesday remained shut to commemorate the death anniversary of Maqbool Bhat, the founder of banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).
Mobile internet services in Kashmir were also snapped as a precautionary measure to prevent any law and order disturbance.
The low speed internet service was suspended early morning which remained in force till 4 pm. This is the third time that low-speed mobile net was banned since the partial internet restoration since January 25 after remaining suspended for six months since August 5, 2019.
Business establishments, shops and fuel stations remained shut for the day. Majority of public transport traffic was off the roads, however, private vehicles were seen plying on roads.
In north Kashmir’s areas of Baramulla, Pattan, Sopore, Handwara, Kupwara, most of the shops remained closed while traffic was off the roads.
Eyewitness said that people visited the residence of Bhat at Trehgam in north Kashmir. They offered prayers at his residence.
Bhat was hanged by in Tihar jail in 1984 for his involvement in various anti- India activities. His mortal remains stand buried in Tihar jail, like Afzal Guru, the second Kashmiri who was hanged on Feb 9, 2013.
Eyewitness said that four districts of south Kashmir were also shut with traffic of the roads.
Authorities had deployed government forces at several places in Srinagar.
The shutdown call was given by the JKLF against which police lodged an FIR. Two journalists were also summoned by the police for reporting the shutdown call.
