Srinagar-Jammu highway restored after 4 days

MeT predicts snow from today

SRINAGAR: Both aerial as well as surface connectivity to Kashmir was fully restored on Friday as weather conditions significantly improved bringing respite to hundreds of stranded travellers.
On Friday, hundreds of vehicles which were stranded on Srinagar-Jammu highway were allowed to ply for the whole day after the road was thrown open for the movement after four straight days.
Though the road was thrown open on Thursday evening but due its slippery nature authorities had to close it down to avoid any mishap.
Inspector General of Police P Namgayal said that the idea of allowing traffic on Thursday night was shelved soon after roads were found to be slippery.
“But we allowed the traffic on Friday from Srinagar to Jammu. On Saturday, the traffic from Srinagar to Jammu will be again allowed to ply.
“From 7 am to 11 am, only light motor vehicles will be allowed. From 11 am onwards, heavy motor vehicles will be given permission,” he added.
About 10,000 vehicles were stranded on the highway, the only road connectivity with rest of the world during winters.
Similarly air traffic resumed fully on Friday without any interruption.
Director Srinagar Airport Santosh Dhoke told Kashmir Reader that all 26 flights operated normally.
“Status of flight operation on Saturday will be subject to weather and visibility,” he added.
Metrological Department, meanwhile, has predicted light to moderate rain and snowfall on Saturday.
Director MeT Sonum Lotus said that there is likeliness of snowfall in hilly as well as in plains.
According to him, the temperature, which has plummeted to sub-zero level for many weeks, will witness an improvement in coming days. The improvement was witnessed on Friday as there was slight increase in temperatures.
According to weather official, Srinagar’s day temperature was 3.8 degree Celsius while the night temperature was minus 0.8 degree. At Qazigund the recorded day temperature was 4.0 while night temp was minus 0.2.
