Outcry over open drainage at Batamaloo market

SRINAGAR: Open drainage at SDA Jehlum plaza in Batamaloo here has caused inconvenience to the commuters and traders who slammed the authorities for disrupting business
activities.
Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has dug holes at several places here for repairing of drainage system for over a week. An official from the Corporation said that the
Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) constructed the road on drainage system and “it has become difficult for the drainage division of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to
find its old main holes as it is fully blocked near the Jehlum complex”.
A shopkeeper Mehraj-Din told Kashmir reader that the Srinagar Municipal Corporation have cut Doodh Ganga Nallah at several places and are cleaning the drainage system and are
depositing slit on the road.
“We are facing a lot of difficulties as we do not have any place to park our vehicles. The condition of the road has been worst after the work have been started in the area,”
he said.
He said that the rush of the customers have declined “as nobody prefer to visit this market due to the worst condition of the road”.
Altaf Hussain, executive engineer of Srinagar drainage division of SMC said that due to the blockade of the Doodh Ganga Nallah near Jehlum complex, they are cleaning the
drainage system.
“The drainage is six feet deep. We have to cut the drainage at several places. We are going to upgrade the main holes in 60 places in the area,” he said.
He added that without proper maintenance, the whole area may get waterlogged.
