Flights cancelled, highway shut as snow returns to Valley

MeT predicts dry weather but cold wave to continue

Srinagar: A fresh spell of snow in Kashmir affected air connectivity at Srinagar Airport and resulted in closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway for traffic on Friday.
While flight operations were running smoothly in the morning, however, 12 flights were cancelled in the afternoon as the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir received snow.
Director Srinagar Airport Santosh Dhoke confirmed the cancellation of flights to and from Srinagar. He said that 12 flights scheduled from 1:30pm were cancelled because of poor visibility caused by inclement weather.
They include four flights of Indigo, three flights of GoAir, Air India flights and one flight each of Vistara, Spicejet and Air Asia.
He said that though runway was clear as there was no accumulation of snow but it was low visibility caused by snow that resulted in the air traffic disruption.
According to him, the visibility dropped below 800 metres and only 13 flights scheduled in the first half of the day could operate from the airport.
However, traffic plied normally on Srinagar-Jammu highway, the main arterial road connecting Kashmir to outside world, till afternoon.
Superintendent of Traffic Police (Rural) Muzaffar Shah said that the highway was through for one-way traffic till 5pm. Later it was closed due to slippery condition triggered by snow.
He said that more than 6,000 trucks are stranded in Kashmir.
It was snowing at Jawahar Tunnel along the strategic highway when this report was being filed.
The Srinagar-Leh highway has also been closed for traffic after last week’s snow. Similarly, traffic on the Mughal Road connecting Pirpanjal region in Jammu with Kashmir is also suspended for the 15 consecutive days due to
accumulation of snowfall and landslides.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department has predicted dry weather from today till December 29.
Deputy Director, MeT Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said temperature will dip and cold wave will continue in the valley.
