Govt invites bids for installing weather radars for accurate forecast

Srinagar: In the face of erratic weather patterns, the meteorological department (MeT) has set the process for procuring three weather radars for more accurate weather forecast in the region.
Director MeT department Sonam Lotus told Kashmir Reader they have invited bids for the radars in the face of ongoing climate change.
“By 2020, these radars will be working,” he added.
The radars will be installed at three sites including Banihal, Jammu and Ladakh. Currently, Kashmir has only single weather radar installed at the premises of MeT department at Rambagh.
But it is not able to accurately provide accurate weather patterns for the two union territories which is why there is a necessity for three radars, an official said.
He said that the department will focus on now-casting which means that the weather forecast for four to six hours will be relayed in advance.
“This will ensure safe travel for the commuters on the Jammu-Srinagar highway,” says Lotus.
The highway often remains closed due to bad weather during winters. This, according to him, will help travelers to plan their travel accordingly without letting them stranded on the road.
