Director SKIMS issues gag order for officials, doctors

Srinagar: Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura has issued an order asking officials and doctors of the premier institution to desist from speaking to media about its working and services.
The order was issued days after Dr A G Ahangar took over as the new Director of the SKIMS Soura following the High Court orders.
“Only the Medical Superintendent of SKIMS Soura can speak to media” either verbally or through written statement to be issued by the Public Relations Office, it said.
“The order has been issued to check the bad press of SKIMS Soura which has created confusion among the people and brought bad name to the institute,” a senior official told Kashmir Reader.
He said the institute had been hogging the headlines since last many years following the media expose about various issues related to pharmacy, purchase section and private practice of the faculty.
“The new director has been stern on media relations as he has been the victim of media trial himself,” the official said.
A faculty member wishing anonymity said that Dr Ahangar deliberated on the issue of PR and media relations in detail during a series of meetings with SKIMS officials and the faculty.
“The fresh gag order came immediately after the last meeting of officials held a week ago in the Director’s chamber,” he said.
Director Dr A G Ahangar didn’t respond to repeated calls from Kashmir Reader office.
Medical Superintendant Dr Farooq Jan said the order is just a replication of the previous order in which the last director had designated him as the only official spokesperson of SKIMS.
“Only I was authorized to speak to media then. Now, the fresh order issued by the new director has reiterated that,” he said.
