Anantnag resident convicted for cheating gold jeweller

SRINAGAR: A trial court at Srinagar convicted a resident from Anantnag for cheating a gold jeweller by issuing cheques worth Rs 20 lacs with insufficient amount after purchasing the gold.
Showkat Ahmad Zargar from Bijhbera, Anantnag was sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar Gowhar Dalal and further imposed with compensation to the tune of cheque amount mentioned in the complaint towards the complainant – Parvaiz Ahmed Phafoo of Srinagar.
“Accused is handed over to the prosecution wing in the open court with the direction to hand over him to Superintendent, Central Jail Srinagar,” CJM recorded in the judgement.
It was recorded that the court is satisfied that the accused has committed offence under the section 138 Negotiable Instrument (NI) Act.
The case diary reveals that the Complainant dealing with the trade of golden jewellery having his shop at Hari Singh High Street under the name Style of Gold Glamound was approached by the accused for purchasing golden ornaments worth Rs 20 lacs in 2016.
The accused thereafter issued three cheques in favour of the jeweller but the said cheques later on could not be encashed for the reason insufficient amount.
The complainant called up the accused telephonically, but still the amount was not paid. Then a legal notice was served upon the accused through Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, who contested before court that the accused has intentionally deceived the complainant and be tried
