‘Wall of Kindness’ hit by shutdown

SRINAGAR: The “Wall of Kindness” has been hit by continuous shutdown, which has crippled the life in Kashmir.
This campaign was started by a group of people in Srinagar in the year 2018 for the betterment of needy people. This concept has started in Turkey and it has spread to the other parts of the world where people donated their used goods and clothes to the poor.
During the normal days, the people from various areas of the city used to donate their used clothes for this cause.
“Due to the prevailing situation in Kashmir, the people from various areas are not able to come and donate their clothes. Only some locals from Abi Guzar area are donating the clothes,” said Bilal Ahmad, a resident from Abi Guzar.
He added, “The people who were helping the needy and poor through this wall by donating some clothes are not able to help them due to the prevailing situation.”
“Wall of Kindness’ initiative is also known as “Deewar-e-Meherbani” in some countries like Iran.
Basit Ahmad, a local, told the Kashmir Reader that this wall was very helpful for the needy and poor people. “This was full of clothes till August 16. The people were taking clothes from the wall,” he said.
“During the normal days, 60-100 needy people were visiting this wall and taking clothes as per their own choice. From last few weeks, the wall is empty and only few clothes are hanging. The rush of the people, who were coming to the spot, have also decreased,” he said.
The volunteers were donating clothes, shoes, school bags and other things for the needy, Basit added.
