Thousands attend funeral prayers of slain militants in south Kashmir

Srinagar: Defying strict restrictions, thousands of people on Friday participated in funeral prayers of two slain militants who were killed in an encounter in Balhama Khonmoh that started yesterday after they attacked a policemen guarding a BJP leader Anwar Khan.

Sources said that thousands of people started gathering in Nowdal Tral and Aghanzipora Awantipora, the native villages of Owais Ahmed and Shabir Ahmed respectively to take part in last rites of slain militants.

“Forces were deployed in every nook and corner to prevent people from taking part in funeral prayers of slain militants, however people came through fields to take part in their funeral prayers”, local witnesses said.

“In Awantipora, locals made a make shift bridge near Ziyarat sharief Awantipora for the people so that they can easily reach slain militants’ home”, a local witness said.

He said that as soon as body of Shabir reached his native village, people present there burst into tears adding that as men were raising slogans, women and children were seen wailing and beating their chests.

Locals said that after four back to back funeral prayers, slain militant was laid to rest.

Meanwhile, locals from Nowdal said that slain Owais was also laid to rest soon after his body reached Nowdal adding that his dead body was completely charred and was not shown to any body.

They said that thousands of people participated in his funeral prayers adding that he was laid to rest amid pro-Islam slogans.
