KU contemplates to defer PG entrance exams

Srinagar: Authorities in Kashmir University (KU) are in a fix over managing the conduct of clubbed exams of 5th and 6th semester college students and later entertain the same batch in entrance test for admissions in Post Graduation (PG) courses and other programmes.

Top sources said the vice-chancellor KU on Wednesday convened a meeting with varsity officials however, there was no concrete decision taken for holding the exams.

“The meeting couldn’t decide about the modus operandi for carrying out the exams. The members will meet again in coming days,” a top official who is privy to the meeting informed.

He said the varsity has however, decided to defer the conduct of PG entrance of Kashmir University till July.

“The university will conduct the PG entrance test in July but the officials are clueless about holding of 5th and 6th semester exams. They are confused about how to manage the two semester syllabus in one paper,” the official revealed.

The official said the varsity is likely to call Degree College Principals in the next meeting and seek their report about completion of syllabus and other exam related issues.

“The varsity either has to give some internal relaxation in papers or curtail the syllabus and set the question paper accordingly. But this can be decided after seeking course completion certificate from the college principals,” the official said.

Interestingly, the outgoing batch of college students started their first semester (first year) in August 2015 due to delay in college admissions caused post 2014 floods. Later, the university couldn’t conduct the semester exams on time due to five month long summer uprising in 2016, causing inordinate delay in completion of their graduation.

“As of now the students are studying in 5th semester and Governor who is also the chancellor of the university endorsed the university view in the last review meeting to hold combine exams for 5th and 6th semester exams,” the official said, adding that the varsity administration is chalking out strategies to hold combined exams.

“Final decision about pattern of exams will be taken in the next meeting,” added the source.

Earlier, the directorate of admissions and competitive examination of the University had issued a circular regarding admission process for the Post-Graduate and other courses for the 2018 academic session.

As per notification issued, the admission process for the Post-Graduate and other courses for the academic session 2018 will commence from 3rd week of March.

However, the outgoing students were enraged and said they won’t be eligible to appear in the PG entrance examination, if conducted in March.

‘The previous notification will be cancelled and fresh notification for PG entrance test will be issued later and subsequently schedule for clubbed exams for 5th and 6th semester will also be announced,” the official in KU said.
