GDC strike row: DDC Srinagar records statements

Srinagar: Following an enquiry ordered by the state’s health and medical education Minister, District Development Commissioner Srinagar Abid Rashid summoned Principal Government Dental College (GDC) & Hospital, Dr Reyaz Farooq along with the Head of the department, Orthodontics Dr Muhammad Mushtaq to record their statements.

The minister ordered an enquiry following an indefinite strike call by the students of GDC alleging misbehavior and assault by HOD Orthodontics.

During the entire day, the Principal, Head of the Department and other faculty members were summoned by DDC separately to record their statements regarding the issue that has been hampering the working of the hospital and the college, sources informed.

Notably, the government on Tuesday ordered an enquiry into the matter wherein the students at GDC had alleged that the concerned HoD was harassing them and was torturing them physically as well as mentally.

The Minister for Health and Medical Education had ordered DDC to submit its report within two days.

“The report is expected to be submitted today with all the recommendations aimed at restoring the working atmosphere at GDC,” sources said.

Pertinently, the students, including Post-Graduates and Under-Graduates are on continuous strike for last six days now, demanding an immediate removal of ‘erring’ HoD, who as per them has been torturing them for months now. The strike apart from disrupting the academics at the college is also affecting the patient care at the hospital.

The Principal, earlier contacted said that the administration was doing everything possible not to make patient care suffer by alerting other consultants to stay alert and tackle the rush of patients. However, the efforts seem not to be doing any good to the affected patient care at the Hospital as patients are being continuously being sent home without any medical care being provided.

While stating that their faith is rested upon the enquiry which is being conducted by the DDC Srinagar and believe that justice will be served to them, the striking students Wednesday, in a statement issued to the press said, “After Health Minster’s intervention, a two day enquiry has been initiated by the DDC Srinagar, our faith is rested upon the Chief Minster and the Health Minster for a fair enquiry.”

Adding, “so that their faith in the system is not only strengthened, but becomes an example for all those who believe in taking a stand for injustice and harassment being done to them.”
