Gulmarg receives fresh snowfall, rains in plains

Srinagar: With the upper reaches in Kashmir Valley including Gulmarg and other higher reaches receiving snowfall while plains including the summer capital of the state receiving an overnight rainfall, the minimum temperatures across Kashmir showed a remarkable increase, a MeT official said on Wednesday.

Srinagar had a rainfall of 0.8mm till 0830 hours on Wednesday while there was remarkable increase in night temperature due to cloud cover, recording a low of 5.8 against minus 0.9 degrees Celsius on the previous night.

A Meteorological official that Gulmarg, the world famous ski-resort had 1.5 inches of fresh snow overnight. The night temperature in the resort also recorded an increase, settling at minus 2.0 degree Celsius against minus 4.0 degree Celsius on previous night.

Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, had overnight rainfall of 1.8mm till 0830 hours and recorded a low of 3.4 degrees Celsius, the official said.

Pahalgam, the world famous health resort in south Kashmir, also witnessed a rainfall of 3.8mm during the time while as it recorded a low of 1.4 degrees Celsius. Kokernag, another south Kashmir area, had overnight rainfall of 2.4mm till 0830 hours and recorded minimum of 2.2 degrees Celsius.

Ladakh region remained coldest in the state with Kargil recording a minimum of minus 9.0 degrees Celsius while Leh district recorded a low of minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, the official added.

Meanwhile, a traffic department official said that the strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway was open for one-way traffic from Srinagar to Jammu.
