Jammu: In what could adversely affect the academic standards in government educational institutions, at least 4351 posts of teachers and lecturers are vacant in the school education department.
As per the official figures, 3126 posts of teachers and 1225 posts of lecturers have remained vacant in the school education department till date, taking a toll on the overall academic activity.
The official documents reveal that around 3126 teacher posts which include 2581 general line teachers and 545 Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan teachers (SSA) are lying vacant in the department.
“Out of 2581 vacancies of general line teachers, 1864 vacant posts of direct recruitment quota of Kashmir division have been recently referred to SSB for selection of suitable candidates,” the official document reveals.
The official documents also reveal that the scheme-specific vacancies occurred due to upgradation of SSA schools and are being filled up shortly under relevant guidelines.
“Around 1255 posts-593 direct promotion and 632 promotion quota of 10 2 lecturers were also lying vacant in Kashmir division in various disciplines under direct recruitment and promotion quota,” the official documents say.
Interestingly, 1059 posts of 10 2 lecturers of various disciplines under direct recruitment were referred to PSC in 2016 out of which the selection and appointment orders in for 915 candidates have been issued.
Director school education Kashmir G N Itoo, meanwhile said every effort was being taken to fill all the vacant posts as early as possible.
“We have decided to engage academic arrangement teachers from primary to higher secondary level to overcome the dearth of teaching staff in schools,” he said.
He said such an arrangement is a first of its kind in school education department wherein academic arrangement will be started from primary level.
“But we will also refer other vacancies to SSB so that vacancies are filled at its earliest. Till then we will take assistance from these academic arrangements in schools,” he said.
