Srinagar: With 50 per cent of Public Health Centres (PHCs) functioning without the facility of labour rooms, the health department has done well as around 4075 deliveries were carried out in peripheries in the month of January, out of which 2680 were carried out normally.

The monthly work done statement available with the Directorate of Health Services,  Kashmir reveals that besides, this number the Lower segment Caesarean section (LSCS) procedures that have been carried out in peripheries in the month of January is 1395, which seems quite huge, given the specialized manpower that is hand catering to the needs the entire population in the peripheries.

Pertinently, the number of Gynaecologists remains the same in peripheries and in terms of infrastructure there has been marked change over the past few months.

“Shockingly, there are only 2 per cent of PHCs functioning with a full-fledged operation theatre,” says an official at the DHSK.

As per the DHSK work done statement, in terms of handling maternity cases, district Anantnag is topping the list, with 1105 deliveries being carried out in the Month of January. Out of total number of deliveries, 690 normal deliveries were carried out and 415 LSCS procedures were carried out during the month.

As per the figures available with ‘Kashmir Vision,’ district Anantnag is availing the services of 4 Senior Consultants, 45 Consultants and 146 medical officers. The strength of man power also includes 39 dental surgeons.

District Kupwara carried out 674 total deliveries in January, which includes: 556 normal deliveries and 118 LSCS procedures. Kupwara falls second in line after Anantnag for the word done in January, the figures reveal.

However, contrastingly, Kupwara is currently availing the services of 2 Senior Consultants, 23 Consultants and 102 medical officers, which is quite less to what is in place in district Anantnag.

Interestingly, as per the data available on the manpower that is in-position in the peripheries available on the DHSK website, there are only 11 senior consultants working in the entire Kashmir province which includes 11 districts excluding Srinagar: Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kargil, Kulgam, Kupwara, Leh , Pulwama  and Shopian.
