Colorful dreams turn dull as youth fights pellet injuries

Pulwama: Sayar Tariq Rather, a youth who was hit by pellets in October this year has failed to regain sight in his right eye even after the family under duress and financial constraints managed to get three surgeries performed on him so far.
Sayar, a 12th class Arts student of Higher Secondary School Litter was hit by pellets this year during the clashes that erupted after the encounter in Heff Shopian. The encounter site was a mere half kilometer from his residence where he was hit by pellets in his eyes.
Haleema Bano, mother of Sayar said they spent huge amount of money for his treatment so far but unfortunately he is yet to regain his sight in his right eye.
She added that despite belonging to poor section of the society, they managed to conduct his three surgeries so far but all in vein. “Our son has to undergo fourth surgery in next month in which lens will be fixed in his right eye,” she said.
“We are facing a lot of difficulties since then as we cannot afford the costs of the treatment and we have spent all that was left with us. Sayar’s father is a labourer whose earnings are not even sufficient to cover the families daily needs,” says Haleema.
Sayar said as soon as the encounter ended in Litter Pulwama on October 14, there were minor clashes in the area post the encounter.
“I went to see the situation outside from my compound during which I suffered pellet injuries in my right eye and lost my eyesight,” he said, adding that he felt unconscious and was rushed to the hospital.
“The injury has shattered my dreams as it has halted my studies,” he said.
Pertinently, two militants including LeT Commander Waseem Shah of Heff Shopian and a scholar Nisar Ahmed of Litter were killed during encounter in Pulwama.
Moreover, one civilian Gulzar Ahmad of Allaiepora was also killed post encounter during clashes and over 30 were injured.
“I had lots of dreams to peruse but now given the situation I cannot even study and fulfill my parents dreams,” says a dejected Sayar.
