JRL protests against ‘thrashing’ of jail inmates

Srinagar: The activists and associates of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) on Thursday staged protests against the ‘thrashing of jail inmates’ and demanded their early release.

The protesters comprising of all the factions of Hurriyat including JKLF assembled in the premises of Jamia Masjid and staged a protest against what they termed as the ‘inhuman’ approach towards the jail inmates.

The protesters were raising slogans and holding placards displaying ‘stop harassing Kashmiri prisoners’, ‘down with state terrorism’ and ‘ensure safety of Kashmiri prisoners’.

The protesters said that the today’s protest called by the leadership was aimed to show solidarity with the jail inmates who according to them have been thrashed brutally inside the jail premises.

They said that the world Human Rights bodies are acting as a mute spectator. “The HR bodies must put an immediate end to their silence and should come forward and take notice of the brutalities on jail inmates.

The protesters said that those who are languishing in the jails should be released at an earliest.

The protestors said that the ‘brutal acts’ against the jail inmates are unfortunate and should be stopped forthwith.

Pertinently, the photographs of Kashmiri jail inmates in Tihar Jail New Delhi went viral on social media sites following which the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed concern and spoke to the Union Home Secretary in this regard.

The thrashing of jail inmates was widely condemned by the pro-freedom as well as the mainstream politicians, saying that these doings are ‘unacceptable’.

Former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday asked the Chief Minister to visit the jails to see the sufferings of imprisoned persons.
