Kupwara: In a fit of anger, a youth allegedly abducted and murdered a teenaged girl for declining his marriage proposal and is now cooling his heels in custody in frontier district of Kupwara.
The arrest of the youth came within hours of committing the crime, police said.
The police said the accused , identified as Mohammad Altaf Malik ( 26), a Surmarag village resident of Handwara Tehsil, was in contact with the victim for past over a year and off late suspected her to have a relation with some other boy.
Malik abducted and later strangulated Gulshan Akther ( 19), a Gushi village resident last evening in a forest area to avenge her refusal for a marriage proposal more than a year after a love affair or contact between the two, a senior police officer said.
“He strangulated her in the forest area leaving the body and fled from the spot. During sustained interrogation, the accused confessed to have committed the crime claiming off late the girl was declining his proposals for marriage even after a contact between the two that lasted more than year,” Shamsher Hussian, SSP Kupwara told reporters.
“The accused was arrested from Handwara this morning after we tracked him down using the mobile tower location. The girl’s parents yesterday had lodged the compliant claiming she was missing since morning.
The accused has been charged with murder and kidnapping.
However the post mortem report is still awaited,” he added.
Earlier, the accused took the victim to Kairhama forests, around seven kilometres from Kupwara headquarters in an auto rickshaw a day before to commit the crime. Police has registered FIR no. 306/2017 under section 302 (murder) and 366 (Kidnapping or forcing woman for marriage). (Kashmir Wire)
