Srinagar: A cop was killed while as another sustained injuries after militants attacked two separate police locations in South Kashmir.
Police said that suspected militants hurled a grenade at a Special Operations Group (SOG) camp of Jammu and Kashmir Police in Shopian district but it exploded in the compound without causing any damage.
Meanwhile, later in the afternoon, two cops were injured when suspected militants attacked a police party in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
“A police party on naka duty at Rajpora was fired upon by some militants at around 16.10 hrs. In the ensuing gun battle two police personnel have sustained injuries and shifted to the hospital. The condition of the injured personnel is stated to be stable. Area has been cordoned by the SFs and search is going on,” a police spokesman said in a statement here.
The two policemen were identified as Abdul Salam who was hit by a bullet in his abdomen and Muneer Ahmad whose right leg was hit during the attack.

Notably, the attack on the police installations came at a time when most parts of south Kashmir were put under high security in view of ruling BJP leaders visit to their slain colleague’s house.
Sources said that the security in South Kashmir was kept on high alert in view of BJP leader Sham Lal Sharma’s visit to the Shopian district.
Pertinently, army yesterday claimed that the recent attacks on the political leaders are an attempt of desperation on part of militants.
“They are not able to make any concerted action against the security forces. So they are looking at weaker targets and I am given to believe that police are taking necessary action against the perpetrators of these crimes,” General Officer Commanding of the Army’s Victor Force, Major General B S Raju, told reporters on Friday.
He said that around 100 odd militants were still active in the South Kashmir area, and said that around 80 militants have been killed in the region during the past six months.
However, a top police official said that attacks are not something thing in South Kashmir and there is no link between attack and the Ministers visit.
Additional SP Shopian Ifrooz Ahmad said that BJP minister visited his slain party leaders’ family in the morning and SOG camp was attacked in the afternoon.
