SDH Sopore’s blood bank hits another road block

Srinagar: Even after the establishing of a proper blood bank in Sopore Sub District Hospital has been approved by the National Aids Control Organizaton (NACO) and the Department of Drug Control, the administration is once again showing a callous attitude by stalling the process and citing the reasons of scarcity of funds for creating the infrastructure.

Sources revealed that the higher ups are not taking the issue seriously and are stalling the process by citing one reason or the other, especially the scarcity of funds, thus jeopardising the patient care at the hospital.

Earlier, the team has visited the hospital Blood Bank, after inspecting the section and asked administration to come up with a plan for providing the required infrastructure for the Blood Bank.

Block Medical Officer (BMO) Sopore, Dr Sami also confirmed the development, and had said that there is another building that is about to complete and the administration will be shifting the Blood Bank to the newly constructed building, however, sources are saying that the building lacks 24 hours electricity supply which will make it impossible to run a Blood Bank from there.

“There is no round the clock electricity supply available, in addition, there is no proper arrangement of security, given the fact there are costly machines that will be installed in the building,” sources said.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Baramulla, Dr. Bashir Ahmad Chalkoo, in spite of repeated attempts could not be contacted for his comments on the issue

As per the sources, BMO has been directed to use funds from Hospital Development Fund (HDF) to do away with any deficiency that may crop up while establishing the blood bank.

“However, the BMO cannot do that because the fund fall under the direct control of concerned MLA,” the sources added.

Insiders are also saying that due to the ‘unofficial’ and ‘non-registered’ status of the Blood Bank the staff of the Blood Bank is also working under great risk and the administration is jeopardizing their career as well.

Experts are saying that a fully functional Blood Bank is the essential requirement for the hospital as it can help in decreasing the patient referral rate to Srinagar. The unofficial and unregistered Blood Bank is currently making it possible for the hospital administration to continue running 24 hours emergency and operation theatre services—services which can be strengthened by the establishing of registered and fully functional Blood Bank.
