MHRD proposes adoption of NCERT books for schools

Srinagar: In a significant development, union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has proposed adoption of NCERT books and syllabus in government run schools of J&K state.

The proposal according to sources has been prepared by MHRD after it convened a meeting with official of school education Department in first of October here. The meeting was convened to review implementation of centrally sponsored schemes in the state.

After the meeting, MHRD has prepared a road map for complete revamp of education sector in the state and submitted its action plan for the road map to Prime Minister’s office and Ministry of Home Affairs as well.

The union ministry officials said is mulling to provide CBSE affiliation to several government schools in J&K state as well.

“The developments came to fore after the review meeting was convened here in first week of October. MHRD wants to make J&K state a centre of excellence in education,” an official said.

The officials said CBSE affiliation and NCERT syllabus have been cited by MHRD as measures to improve classroom teaching and the quality of schools.

Besides, the union Ministry has also decided to provide Rs 18 crore as assistance to the state to build an ICT laboratory and provide Internet and dish TV connections in the 285 schools.

“The measures have been taken as very few number of schools have established ICT laboratory in government schools as most of the institutions are without internet and electricity facilities,” official said.

The officials said only 1.3 percent of  government schools have computers and even very few  have Television  sets or  Dish TV connection and projectors.

“The government plans to install solar panel in 229 schools that  are located in cut off areas and face erratic power supply,” the official said.

Also, the government is mulling to install V Sat in schools which arw without internet facilities.

“The basic reason for preparing road map by MHRD is that state was earlier appreciated for adopting some good practices in schools which are aimed at improving quality of education. So union government wants to give boost to our efforts and are proposing major overhauling of the department,” the official said.
