Amid restrictions, Muharram processions carried out in Srinagar

For the second consecutive day, the district administration continued to impose restrictions in Srinagar parts to foil any ‘untoward incident’ during the Muharram procession here.   

The restrictions under section 144 CrPC were imposed in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of 13 Police Stations including Batamaloo, Sherghari, Karan Nagar, Shaheed Gunj, Maisuma, Kralkhud, Kothibagh, Ram MunshiBagh (partly), Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, MR Gunj and Safakadal.

Sources told Kashmir Vision that as per the inputs  received, there was credible apprehensions that certain miscreants may disturb the Muharram procession and create law and order problems, which may result into breach of peace and tranquility and may cause loss to life or property.

“In order to facilitate the religious gatherings of the community smoothly as per the past practice and to maintain peace, public tranquility and to ensure safety of life and property, imposition of restriction under section 144 CrPC was imperative,” sources  said.

Huge contingents of Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed on the roads today especially in the areas where the Muharram procession were carried out, eyewitnesses said.

The roads as well the junctions according to the witnesses were blocked by the Police, which halted the pedestrian as well the vehicular movement.

However, the Muharram procession, at two places in Srinagar including Shamswari Khanyar and Gaw Kadal here were carried out peacefully.

Thousands of mourners participated in the Muharram procession that were carried out today.

The mourners remembered the sacrifices of Karbala martyrs and raised slogans in favour of Imam Hussain (AS) and other martyrs, besides reciting ‘Mersiya’. They were also seen wailing during the procession.

The Srinagar areas would continue to witness restrictions on the third consecutive day on Sunday to ‘ensure smooth conduct of Muharram procession’.

As per the official announcement, the restrictions would continue as ‘precautionary measure’.

On Sunday (10th Muharram), a huge Muharram procession is expected at Gulshan Bagh Bota Kadal, which would end at Zadibal area.
