Explosions at Kabul airport as US and NATO leaders land

Explosions were reported at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul as NATO leader Jens Stoltenberg and US defence boss General James Mattis landed in Afghanistan.

“Two rockets hit the northern part of Kabul International Airport on Wednesday”, media reports said.

Kabul airport Chief Yaqub Rassouli said that the rockets hit the air forces’ hangars in the northern part. He added that the missiles were fired from Deh Sabz district of Kabul, TOLO News reported.

“At 11.36 a.m. two missiles were fired on Kabul International Airport from Deh Sabz district, damaging the air force hangers and destroying one helicopter and damaging three other helicopters, but there were no casualties,” Rassouli said.

There are reports of gunfire after the three rockets were launched at the airfield from the nearby mountains.

All flights have been suspended and the airport has been evacuated.
