Attack by BAT team foiled in Kupwara, says army

An attack on army post by armed intruders suspected to be from Pakistan army’s Border Action Team (BAT) has been reportedly repelled in Kupwara district of north Kashmir near Line of Control.

Defence sources said that a group of 6-7 militants attempted an attack on army post near Gutthur in Keran sector adjacent to Hayhama of Kupwara today around 2pm. “The attack was however foiled effectively as army retaliated to the gunfire. After 1-hour firing, the attackers were pushed back,” they said.

Defence sources said that the attackers could be from Pakistan’s BAT which comprises of soldiers as well as militants. The incident has come three days before first anniversary of ‘surgical strike’ carried out by India last year on September 29against militants in Pakistani Kashmir.

Unconfirmed sources said that two bodies have been spotted near the Army Post. Meanwhile, army has not officially released any statement over the incident yet.

Phone calls for seeking an official comment from Defense spokesman, Colonial Rajesh Kalia also did not materialize despite repeated attempts by this newspaper.
