Soldier killed, three injured in cross LoC firing

An army soldier was killed and three others were injured in a ‘sniper fire’ by Pakistan Rangers at Keran sector along the Line of Control in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday, police sources said.

A senior police officer said that Pakistan Rangers in “violation of ceasefire” opened sniper fire at 5/9 GR unit of the army near ‘Pimple post’ in Keran sector along the LoC. Four soldiers were injured and airlifted to army’s 92-base hospital at Badamibagh here, the officer said.

One of the injured identified as Rajesh Khatri was declared brought dead by the doctors at the hospital, an army officer confirmed. The official said that the army retaliated the fire and intermittent firing was going on in the area.

Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday said that heavy exchange of fire took place last night following which two Pakistani infiltrators were gunned down in neighbouring state of Punjab.

Two Pakistani militants were killed late on Tuesday night after the BSF troops foiled an infiltration bid across the international boundary in the Ajnala Sector near Amritsar, Punjab.

“There was input that there can be infiltration attempt too. At 1:30 a.m., movement was spotted. Two people came ahead and two were seen behind on Pakistan side. They first fired and BSF retaliated leading to killing of two persons who are Pakistani national,” Mukul Goel, BSF IG, Punjab said.

Goel said that the operation was carried out after information received from the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB).

“The search operation is still on. We feel more recovery can be made. We will do analysis of the SIM card that has been recovered from the terrorists,” Goel said.

According to the reports, the forces also recovered four packets of Heroin, one AK-47 Rifle, one AK Magazine, one pistol, one mobile phone, and Pakistani currency worth Rs. 20,000.
