Locals protest after CRPF troopers ‘thrash’ drivers

The locals as well as the Sumo Drivers Association Awantipora, Saturday staged a protest against paramilitary CRPF troopers after they allegedly beat up passenger vehicle drivers in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The incident according to the locals happened on Srinagar-Jammu highway at Awantipora area of Pulwama district.

Witnesses said that a biker slipped from his bike after being stopped by CRPF troopers as an army convoy was plying and sumo drivers went to help the biker but they were ruthlessly beaten by CRPF troopers.

The locals as well as the Sumo Drivers Association members staged protest against the incident. They were demanding action against the CRPF troopers involved in the incident.

Ishfaq Ahmad, a member of Drivers Association Awantipora while talking to Kashmir Vision said that drivers identified as Reyaz Ahmad Rather, resident of Chandrigam Awantipora and Bilal Ahmad Bhat, resident of Noorpora Tral were beaten by forces without any provocation.

“The association following the incident decided to protest against the paramilitary troopers. We also went to police station Awantipora to lodge an FIR,” he said.

Ahmad said that the Station House Officer (SHO) contacted and called the concerned CRPF Commandant Officer to his office where he apologised before the drivers association.

“The commandant also assured that such incidents won’t happen in future,” he added.
