The state police on Saturday foiled the scheduled travel of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), leadership including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik to New Delhi to protest outside the National Investigation Agency (NIA), headquarters and to court arrest.
The JRL had earlier announced to court arrest before NIA and to stage dharna outside the central probe agency’s headquarter in wake of the NIA raids and arrests from past couple of months.
Earlier, Malik who was arrested on September 07 was released from the Srinagar’s central jail to allow them to march towards the NIA headquarters in New Delhi.
However, the separatist camp later announced a protest rally from Maisuma and Nigeen to Geelani’s Hyderpora residence.
The JRL had said that they will assemble at Geelani’s residence and will fly to New Delhi at 01pm. The flight to New Delhi was scheduled at 03pm today.
Following the statement given by the JRL, the state police arrested Malik and lodged him at Kothi Bagh Police Station while the Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz was placed under house detention to stop them from leading the protest rally from Nigeen to Hyderpora.
Malik in the morning hours today was shifted to Srinagar’s central Jail while the Hurriyat (G) chief, Syed Ali Geelani continued to remain under house arrest from past several months.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Munir Ahamd Khan said that the leaders were “to take a rally from Jamia Masjid, Maisuma to Hyderpora before moving towards New Delhi”.
“The people were being mobilized by the separatist leaders for a rally which would create law and order problem and disturb normal life and peace in Srinagar. So to maintain peace, law and order, we have put the separatists under detention,” Khan said, while talking to a local new gathering agency.
“Had they moved normally like passengers go, we would have no problem in allowing them to go wherever they wanted to go. But we cannot allow anyone to disturb law and order and peace in the state,” the IGP said.
Meanwhile, the JKLF leaders and activists following the police action staged protest here at Abi Guzar.
The leaders were carrying placards reading that ‘Arrest of Malik and house detention of Mirwaiz is the frustration of Government’.
They also chanted slogans against NIA and the Government of India (GoI).
Meanwhile, Mirwaiz accessed social networking sites and said that the authorities detained him and other separatist leaders to “stop them from exposing the NIA drama”.
“Yasin in jail,Geelani Sb& myself house arrested, roads leading to our homes sealed, curfew imposed, just to stop us from exposing the NIA drama!,” Mirwaiz tweeted, after authorities placed him under house detention.
