Mirwaiz questions criminal silence of world HR bodies over disappeared persons

Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Wednesday questioned the criminal silence of world human rights bodies over the thousands of enforced disappeared persons in Kashmir by the Government forces whose whereabouts remain untraced even after passing of more than two decades.

On the international day of the disappeared, Mirwaiz according to the statement issued here said that more than ten thousand civilians have been subjected to enforced disappearances in Kashmir since 1990 by the government forces.

Mirwaiz said for thousands of families the trauma and grief of this great inhuman act continues, as they do not know where their loved ones are or what was done with them. “Most among them keep waiting with the hope that someday they will return,” he said.

He said that mothers and fathers wait for their sons and children for their fathers while thousands of women have been turned into half widows waiting for their husbands.

Mirwaiz said enforced disappearances are one of the worst forms of oppression and inhumanity that the people of Kashmir were subjected to and the tragedy that befell these families is beyond words.

He demanded justice and accountability for the enforced disappeared and their families and said Government should make public their details.  He said family members of the disappeared continue to stage peaceful protests with a hope that international and Indian human rights bodies will listen to their pleas to trace their loved ones.

Mirwaiz said people of Kashmir share the grief of these families and salute their resilience and courage and will always remember the disappeared in the struggle and for justice.

He said on the other hand there are 8000 unnamed graves, which is result of grave war crimes committed by forces in Kashmir.

Mirwaiz said Kashmir is the world’s highest militarized zones where unabated human rights violations occur each day over the past three decades but the irony is that the silence observed by the world human rights bodies.

He said that Indian forces are deployed in every inch of Kashmir and there is an atmosphere of terror and fear everywhere in the Valley.

Hurriyat (M) chief said the reign of terror unleashed by the forces in Kashmir has no justification as the world forums including the United Nations have accepted Kashmir as a disputed territory and there is no denying the fact that 18 resolutions are pending in the UN security council for implementation.

Given the disputed nature of the Kashmir, Mirwaiz said that forces operating under the garb of black laws like AFSPA carry out the killing of Kashmiris knowing that they will not be held accountable

He said that Kashmiri people are bearing the brunt of oppression while continuing their fight for their basic political right and justice and while as international bodies continue to remain silent over the worst form of human rights violations, which is very unfortunate.

Meanwhile, Mirwaiz condoled the demise of seven people of the same family in a tragic road accident in Rajouri and expressed sympathy with the family members of the deceased.
