Army opens fire on protesters in Shopian, scores injured

Following the gunfight between militants and government forces in Awneera Shopian, at least twelve persons were injured when government forces opened fire and resorted to pellet firing in Shopian district.

Earlier three Hizb militants and two army men were killed during the encounter in Awneera village of the district.

As soon as the news about the encounter broke, people came out on streets  protesting against the killings. Intense clashes erupted around the encounter site and many civilians were injured.

 One of the youth was hit by bullet and another was hit by pellets in eye.

Sharing details, BMO Zainpoar PHC, Dr Ab Gani Raina said that twelve civilians were brought to the health facility who were injured.

“One youth namely Mohammad Syed Bhat son of Ghulam Hassan Bhat  was hit by bullet in right his leg while as another youth namely Junaid Maqbool Mir son of Mohd Maqbool Mir resident of Rakh Litter was hit by pellets in eye and the duo was shifted to Srinagar hospitals for advanced treatment,” he said.

Syed’s condition is said to be critical.

Reports said that forces resorted to aerial firing as they were leaving the encounter site.

Clashes were going on when the last reports came in.
