Pulwama residents cry shortage of drinking water

The residents of several Pulwama areas are up in arms against the Public Health Engineering (PHE), department for ‘failing to provide adequate water supply to their villages.

Accusing the authorities for ignoring their plights, the residents of several villages including Gondipora Pingelan, Urpora, Ratnipora, Koil, Malangpora, Padgampora, Larkipora and its adjacent areas have demanded immediate redressal of their genuine grievances.

The residents said that acute water scarcity has hit their villages from the past six months while the officials are paying no heed over their sufferings.

The residents of Gondipora and Urpora villages alleged that they get only one hour water in twenty four hours. They alleged that the water they get from government water supply is always muddy and dirty.

The villagers alleged that the employees who have been posted there do not work according to the requirement of the water supply scheme unit.

“These employees attend their duties for one or two hours and no official has ever bothered to transfer them from their place of posting,” a villager, Mohammad Ayub said.

Irshad Ahmad a resident of Gondipora alleged that the employees fill the water tank from nearby steam and provide the same water to the inhabitants without purifying it, putting our health in danger.

Residents of Ratnipora village alleged that they get drinking water hardly once in a week and authorities are not paying any attention  towards our requests.

All the assurances given by the officials proved hoax,” the residents added.

Naseema Banoo, a resident of Ratnipora said that they have to walk one kilometer to collect potable water.

Imtiyaz Ahmad another resident of Ratnipora said that they are facing acute shortage of drinking water from last two years however, authorities have not bothered to listen to our demands.

Meanwhile, the residents of Koil, Malangpora, Padgampora, Larkipora have also alleged that they get impure water from the various designated water supply schemes that are to provide potable water to the residential areas.

Showkat Ahmad a resident of Larkipora Padgampora alleged that they get earthworms and other insects with the water that is being supplid to them.

“Despite this issue being brought into their notice, the authorities are in deep slumber,” he added.

Rizwan Ahmad a resident of Koil said that a water tank was constructed just before two years in the area however, due to negligence of concerned authorities, the tank developed cracks.

On contacting assistant executive engineer PHE division Pulwama, Firdous Ahmad, he said he will send a team of employees headed by concerned  JE’s there to inspect the quality of water.

“We will ensure that the residents will be provided with safe drinking water and all their issues will be solved on priority basis,” he assured.
