Nursing colleges flout government order, allege students

The students of Islamic University affiliated Nursing colleges today alleged that the government authorities have denied them the recent fee cut announced by the Department of Higher Education.

Students from Muntaqi Memorial Nursing College and Alamdar Nursing Colleges, Char-e-Sharief, said that the University authorities have asked them to submit full fee instead of recently announced fifty percent fee cut in Nursing courses.

According to an order issued on July 17 by the Commissioner Secretary Higher Education, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon, the annual fee for BSc Nursing course has been reduced from Rs 65000 to Rs 32500 and from Rs 65000 to Rs 15000 for BPL category students.

Earlier, Minister for Education Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on July 9 announced 50% fee cut to the students who seek admission in Nursing and Architecture courses in the constituent colleges of Cluster University Srinagar and Jammu.

However, the students said that the latest order by the Higher Education Department regarding the fee cut was applicable to all the colleges across the state.

“When we approached the concerned officials, we were told that the fee cut is only applicable to the students who are studying in government run colleges,” said a student wishing anonymity.

The Islamic University started its Nursing courses in its two colleges in the valley this year. Alamdar Memorial Nursing College and Muntaqi Memorial Nursing College which started its first batch of 40 students each this year, are the first nursing colleges of the autonomous IUST University.

Meanwhile, the officials at these colleges said that the students are being denied the right because of the official apathy.

“I don’t understand why they don’t extend the fee cut to our students. We have approached the concerned officials, but could not get any clear answer from them”, said an official at the college.

“Why don’t our students deserve it,” the official questioned.

Meanwhile, repeated attempts to reach the officials of Higher Education through phone did not yield any results.
