Amargrah Sopore residents protest water scarcity

The residents of Amargrah village of Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Wednesday took to streets against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for ‘failing to provide adequate water supply to them’.

The protesting inhabitants also blocked the Srinagar-Sopore Highway for hours, which resulted in the huge traffic mess in the area, eyewitnesses said.

Hundreds of vehicles were seen stranded in the area after the residents blocked the highway to protest against acute water scarcity, they added.

The locals including men, women and children raised slogans against PHE department and were demanding immediate restoration of water supply to their areas.

The protesters said that they are facing immense hardships due to the acute shortage of water supply from the last one week.

The inhabitants alleged that officials in the PHE department have failed to provide water supply to them as per schedule since last one week.

Meanwhile, witnesses said that the police reached the spot and assured protesters that their demands will be taken up with the concerned authorities.

The assurances by the police made the protestors to disperse peacefully.

Meanwhile, Executive Engineer, PHE Sopore told ‘Kashmir Vision’ that the old water pipelines have resulted in the issues that have come up. The supply lines are not in a position to bear additional pressure of water and as a result many areas are facing hardships.

However, he assured that the demands of residents will be fulfilled soon.
