Implementation of GST in J&K a historic decision: Puneet Singh

Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Jammu west zone president, Puneet Singh Jamwal, on Saturday, said that the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the state was a historic decision.

He said that the new tax regime was aimed at having a uniform tax system in the entire country due to which traders and manufacturers, besides those into horticultue produce, will be able to do business at ease.

Criticising the opposition for creating unnecessary ruckus in both the houses of the Assembly, he said that this was basically to mislead the commoners. “Instead of debating the issue, opposition chose to walk out, which proves that they have nothing to say on the subject but just raise a hue and cry.”

He hailed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Drabu besides the coalition partners for passing GST.

Jamwal said that necessary safeguards to Section 5 of the Jammu and Kashmir constitution and those enshrined in Article 370 of the Indian constitution have been incorporated in the presidential order regarding maintaining the special status of the state despite passing of GST.

Many members had expressed their apprehensions during the discussion on GST in the Assembly.

The PDP leader said that some opposition leaders, just to mislead the people, had created confusion in the minds of the business community and due to this the state was virtually paralysed for a week. Now, that GST has been rolled out, traders and businessmen in the state can carry on their routine work at ease.

He said that coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir was taking several historic decisions which were not being digested by the opposition for the simple reason that they could not perform during their own tenure.

Jamwal recalled late chief minister Mufti Mohamamd Sayeed’s dream of making the state self-reliant and how he wanted the state progress.
