SMC decorates City for Darbar Move, forgets zebra crossings, sign boards

Though the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) here tied every bit to appease the government by decorating the city centre with flower vases, the corporation has miserably failed in repairing sign boards and painting Zebra crossings on vital city routes. Such inaction has once again brought to core the shallow measures taken to make the summer capital safe for people.

The main and the interior roads leading towards Civil Secretariat Srinagar have been macadamized and painted during the Darbar move.

It seems that decorating the roads is important for the administration than erecting the sign boards and paintings at the speed breakers and Zebra crossing for the facilitation of the pedestrians and the commuters.

The experts believe that the non-painting of speed breakers, Zebra crossing and lack of sign boards on the roads is one among the main cause of frequent accidents.

The commuters said that the non-painting of speed breakers has resulted in accidents at various places. “Instead of wasting money on decorating the roads to appease the officials, the authorities should have taken steps for the wellbeing of common people,” they told Kashmir Vision.

“It has been a long time since the speed breakers in the Valley have not been painted while the sign boards ahead of schools, hospital and other main institutes have also been ignored. Thus, simultaneously leading to accidents on these spots,” the commuters added.

They also said that ignoring the priority areas has become a usual practice now in the Valley. “Fining commuters for violating the traffic norms is easy but why the negligence of the authorities is being ignored,” they added.

A senior official in SMC told Kashmir Vision that the speed breakers, Zebra crossing have been decorated during the work while the sign boards will be erected soon. “The remaining speed breakers and the Zebra crossings will be painted soon while the sign boards will be erected too,” he added.
