PSA used to threaten political activists, alleges Geelani

Hurriyat (G) leader Syed Ali Geelani on Monday said that infamous Public Safety Act (PSA), is being repeatedly slapped on political activists.

The veteran leader termed the approach of authorities as sheer extremism as according to him several political leaders have been detained and put behind bars.

“The infamous PSA is being repeatedly slapped on political activists,” Gelani said, demanding immediate release of all detainees before Eid festival.

He said that hundreds of leaders and activists have been lodged in far-flung areas of Jammu.

Referring to continuous detention of Aasiya Andrabi, Fahmeeda Sofi, Masarat Aalam Bhat and scores of others, Geelani said that since long these prisoners are languishing in different jails.

The Hurriyat patriarch said that during people’s uprising in 2016, more than twenty thousand pro-freedom civilians were arrested and more than five hundred are still under detention either in interrogation centers or in different jails.

“In most of cases the detainees were bailed out and their dossiers were quashed by judiciary, however authorities instead of honoring court orders are ignoring all norms and rules, hence detainees are not released and slapped with PSA’s to prolong their detention,” Geelani said.

He expressed his deep concern and said that despite sufficient space and accommodation in four jails in valley, scores of detainees are lodged in Jammu in these extreme temperatures.

Geelani also appealed to ICRC, Amnesty International and international organization for human rights to take cognizance and use their influence for immediate release of all detainees.

“The detainees should also be provided proper medical treatment,” he demanded.
