Amid shutdown, clashes erupt in Shopian

 

Amid complete shutdown in South Kashmir’s Shopian district against the alleged disappearance of a local youth from police custody, clashes erupted between youth and forces in Alyalpora area of the district on Saturday.

Eye-witnesses said that scores of youth pelted stones on the government forces who in return fired tear gas canisters to them, triggering clashes in the area.

Meanwhile, on the third consecutive day today, the district observed complete shutdown against the ‘disappearance’ of a local youth in police custody.

All shops and business establishments remain closed in the town while the vehicular movement was thin on roads.

Pertinently, Zubair Ahmad Turray, son of Bashir Ahmad Turray, according to police escaped from Police Station Keegam on May 1.

Zubair, a resident of Bonebazar area of Shopian was arrested many times on stone pelting charges. Last time he was arrested in the first week of March this year.

The locals however alleged that Police has failed to trace him since May 1.
