Now schools, colleges to be categorized as sensitive, hypersensitive

After seeing no letup in student protests held against thrashing of Pulwama College students, the divisional administration has decided to categorize the schools and colleges as sensitive and hypersensitive given the locations of the educational institutions.

Officials said a meeting in this regard was convened by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Khan on Friday with all the Deputy Commissioners, Director Colleges, Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK), Principals of Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools (HSS) here.

Sources who were part of the meeting said the DCs, Principals of colleges and HSS from other districts than Srinagar attended the meeting through video conference.

“The meeting was convened in view of the ongoing student protests in schools and colleges. Divisional Commissioner asked the district authorities to categorize the schools and colleges as sensitive and hypersensitive on basis of their locations and seek help from the authorities in colleges and schools for the same,” an official who was part of the meeting said.

Pertinently, student protests continued for past five consecutive days even after the divisional authorities ordered suspension of class work in colleges.

Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK) Kumar Rajiv Ranjan also attended the meeting.

Officials also directed the school authorities to appoint nodal officers in the schools to handle the law and order crises if the same arises at any point of time.

 “School heads were directed to take on board Masjid committees and Village Education Committees to run the schools smoothly,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner Baseer Khan has directed the college and school authorities to tighten the watch and ward staff in their respective institutions and keep a vigil on unnecessary movement of outsiders in the school or college campuses.

“College and school heads have been asked to issue I-cards to the students enrolled in the schools,” the officials said.

“The college and school heads were also asked not to allow the students to leave the premises of college or schools before the official timing,” he said.

The Divisional Commissioner has also passed directions for holding inspections in schools in order to take stock of situation in the educational institutions.
