We are forced to drink contaminated water, says Kupwara residents

Residents of frontier district Kupwara Wednesday complained of non-availability of clean water in various localities. The angry residents who are up in arms against the authorities for failing to provide them potable water said that around 22000 souls in Kupwara town are served tap water from a polluted River. “We are forced to use the contaminated water from open sources due to shortage of potable water from last few weeks,” said Tariq Ahmad, a resident of Kupwara. Some other residents said that due to the incessant rains during past few weeks, the water in nullahs and ponds has become muddy and unsafe for human consumption. “Now that alternative sources of water have been rendered unsafe due to the incessant rains, we are left with no source of potable water. The department concerned is testing our patience,” said Shabir Ahmad of Kupwara town. He added that the filtration plant at Bohipora supplying unfiltered water to the people of Kupwara town is not being maintained properly. Meanwhile, Executive Engineer PHE division Kupwara, Nazir Ahmed Dar, told Kashmir Vision that many filtration plants are working, and supplying clean drinking water to the residents. He however, said that he will further look into the matter and direct his staff to ensure that clean water is supplied to the residential areas.
