Separatists oppose Govt proposal to buy Hindu mythology texts for libraries

Hurriyat Conference Tuesday reacted sharply to the proposal of the state government to stock its libraries with Hindu religious books including Bhagwad Gita.

Reacting over the proposal to buy the books, Hurriyat (G) spokesman, Ayaz Akbar, said that the seperatists would oppose any such move. Akbar said that the PDP-BJP dispensation was carrying forward the agenda of the RSS in the state.

He said that the present dispensation was hell bent on turning the state into a Hindu Rashtra. “When Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, visited different parts of world, he carried along Bhagwad Gita. If India claims to be a secular country, he should have carried along books from all religious faiths,” he said. Akbar said that the Hurriayt will resist the efforts of the present government to turn the state into a Hindu nation.

“Indian government will not succeed in its attempts to turn Jammu and Kashmir into a Hindu laboratory. People of Kashmir will oppose all the moves,” he said. Akbar said that the Muslims of India are being subjected to excesses, but added that the people of Kashmir will not be cowed down by the nefarious designs of government.

“The PDP is equally responsible for the atrocities that are committed on people, ‘he said.

Democratic Freedom party (DFP) chairman, Shabir Ahmad Shah, said that the government of which BJP is a part is trying to ” impose” its ideology on people.

“This is part of the plan of government to turn the state into a Hindu nation. We will strongly resist this move,” he said. Shah said that the action by the government was condemnable. “It needs to be repudiated in the strongest possible words. They can’t change the Muslim character of the state through their nefarious designs,” he said.

Shah stressed that Muslims officials of the education department should strongly oppose any such move. “The Muslim officers of the state should resist such attempts,” he said.

Pertinently, education department is contemplating to procure Hindu mythological texts for its libraries at the high school and the higher secondary level.

Commissioner Secretary Education has written a letter to the Director Education asking that the books should be bought, while the lower rung officers in the department have held that there was no provision in the rules to buy the religious books.

Officials have contended that the books are being bought after a proper procedure and selection of a committee headed by senior officers and only those books that help students to cover the existing curriculum are being stocked at the libraries.
