Protests erupted in Banihal area of Ramban district on Sunday after an army vehicle crushed a youth to death besides injuring another youth.

Eyewitnesses said that a speedy army vehicle hit a bike resulting in on spot death of Adil Ahmed son of Mohammad Afzal Sheikh of Nai Basti Banihal. The incident also left Basti Ahmed Wani son of Shakeel Ahmed of Doligam injured.

Basit, according to witnesses has been admitted in emergency hospital Banihal and doctors attending on him have termed his condition as stable.

Soon after the incident hundreds of protestors staged a protest against the army. The protestors blocked the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The protestors demanded registering of a case against the erring army driver.

Reports said that senior officials including Deputy Superintendent of Police Banihal, Dheraj Singh Katoch along with Tehsildars Banihal reach to the spot and pacified the protestors. The officials assured the people that an FIR will be lodged in the case and the guilty will be punished.

Police sources said that an FIR under no. 40/279/337RPC has been registered and investigations have been started in the case.
