People’s League Activist Subjected to Fatal Torture

Peoples League worker Ghulam Muhammad Bulla, arrested from Sopore on February 11, was shifted to Srinagar, where he was reportedly tortured by the police.  Even his close relatives were not allowed to meet him. Bulla subsequently succumbed to the inhuman torture on February 15. His death sparked off severe protests in Sopore.

1990: Lassa Koul Shot Dead
The director of the Srinagar station of the Doordarshan, Lassa Koul, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near his residence in Bemina. JKLF leader Shaukat Bakhshi was charged for the murder. But the designated court at Jammu acquitted him for want of evidence.

2013: Protests Over Guru’s Execution Continue
Protests over the execution of Muhammad Afzal Guru continued for the fourth day across Kashmir, especially in Srinagar. Scores of policemen sustained injuries in clashes with stone-pelting youth.  More than one hundred people were taken into custody.
An epitaph placed by the public over a grave reserved for Guru at the Martyrs’ Graveyard in Eidgah disappeared. But following public outcry, the plaque was restored.
Meanwhile, a signature campaign for the return of the mortal remains of Guru and Maqbool Bhat was launched from the Press Enclave in Srinagar.  Hundreds signed the petition on the very first day.
