‘Democracy cannot be silenced through repression’
SRINAGAR: Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has expressed strong support for students and youth participating in the CJP-led protest in New Delhi, condemning the Delhi Police’s excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators. The association called for an independent investigation into the alleged police brutality, emphasizing that democracy cannot be silenced through repression.
National Convenor Nasir Khuehami described the disturbing visuals of unarmed students being lathi-charged, dragged, assaulted, and detained. He condemned the physical violence against women, students, and peaceful protesters exercising their constitutional right to assemble and voice dissent. Khuehami stressed that such actions have no place in a democracy founded on the rule of law, constitutional morality, and citizen consent.
The association highlighted that Article 19 of the Indian Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and free speech. They asserted that peaceful protests are vital democratic pillars, and responding with coercion weakens constitutional values. Khuehami criticized the police for using force against students demanding justice, especially amid concerns over repeated examination scandals like the NEET-2026 paper leak, which have damaged public trust in the country’s examination system.
Instead of transparency and accountability, students seeking justice have been met with violence. Khuehami questioned why law enforcement officials acted under directives that led to such aggressive tactics. He condemned the protection of those responsible for damaging students’ futures, contrasting it with the brutal treatment of protesters. The association emphasized that government responses should be through dialogue, not intimidation, and that violence is never justified in a democracy.
They pointed out that disagreements with protest demands should not justify excessive force. Students are the voice of the nation’s future, and their concerns deserve serious consideration. Khuehami urged the government to engage in meaningful dialogue, address student grievances, and ensure their safety and dignity during protests.
Furthermore, JKSA called for an impartial inquiry into police actions and demanded accountability for violations. They also urged the government to restore confidence in the examination system by investigating the NEET-2026 leak, identifying culprits, and taking strict action. The association reaffirmed its support for the movement and announced plans for office-bearers to visit the protest site in Delhi to show solidarity and extend support to the students.
