HANDWARA (KUPWARA): In a strong call for a healthier and more responsible society, Shehlat Foundation today organised a powerful anti-drug awareness programme titled “Nasha Mukt Kupwara” at Dak Bungalow Handwara. The event brought together social activists, educationists, poets, civil society representatives and members of the public to pledge collective action against the growing menace of drug abuse and other social evils.
The speakers unanimously appealed to people from every section of society to come forward and join hands in combating the spread of drugs in every nook and corner of Kupwara district. They stressed that the fight against addiction must also include resistance to corruption, alcohol abuse, cigarette smoking, tobacco consumption and all other social evils that threaten the moral fabric of society.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman, Shehlat Foundation, Mohammad Rafiq Lone, said that the Foundation has been established to work hand in hand with the administration, civil society and other organisations to build a drug-free, pollution-free, corruption-free and socially responsible society. He emphasised that collective efforts and public participation are essential to securing a brighter future for the younger generation.
Vice Chairman, Shehlat Foundation, Ghulam Abbas (IIS), former Director, Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), J&K and Ladakh, highlighted the need to transform public attitudes and mindsets. He said that lasting success against drug abuse and other social evils can only be achieved through awareness, education and strong moral values.
Chairman, Civil Society Handwara, Ghulam Hassan Malik, urged citizens to extend full cooperation to the administration and law enforcement agencies in eliminating the menace of drugs and corruption from society.
Renowned poet Nazir Ahmad Qureshi, popularly known as Ibn Shahbaaz, delivered a thought-provoking message, encouraging the youth to “Say No to Drugs and Say Yes to Books,” underlining the importance of education, knowledge and creativity as the best alternatives to addiction.
Adding a cultural dimension to the programme, an inspiring anti-drug song penned by Rafiq Tahir Kawcheki and rendered by Waheed Jeelani was played, drawing appreciation from the audience for its powerful message.
Chairman, Human Rights, Abdul Rashid Shah, former Information Officer, underscored the importance of making every home “Nasha Mukt”, stating that a drug-free society begins with responsible families and strong community values.
Noted teacher Farooq Ahmad Dar emphasised that eradicating drug abuse and other social evils requires collective responsibility involving parents, teachers, religious leaders, civil society and government institutions working in close coordination.
The programme commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Hafiz Irfan Rashid, followed by a Naat Sharif presented by Faisal Manzoor. The proceedings of the event were conducted by Aziem Hafeez Mir.
The event concluded with a renewed pledge by all participants to intensify awareness campaigns and strengthen community participation to make Kupwara a “Nasha Mukt” district, ensuring a safe, healthy and prosperous future for coming generations.
